Ancillary Items–Editors and Illustrators

So, as those of you who have heard me give a talk before can attest, I usually state that the first two and likely largest outlays an author should have are the editor and cover artist. Note that some self-assessment has led me to realize which I place first is dependent on what phase of the book I’m in / recent issues I may have had in one department or the other. But bottom line, if you have $500 for marketing, editing, and cover, I’d say that it should be $225 editing, $225 cover, and $50 for marketing. Why? Because if your cover is crap and your editing subpar, odds are a marketing budget under six figures isn’t going to do you any good.

A good “one stop shop” for indies is Reedsy, and an article on the service is here. I know a few authors who have found their editor on Reedsy, and generally the reviews have been good (although check out the comments for the article). From the editor side, I’ve heard of the stringent requirements to gain a listing. This is a good thing, as it means that odds are you’ll be happy with what you’re paying for. While I seem to keep running into my editors through “word of mouth,” “friends of friend” (and have been really lucky with both), or through folks finding me on Twitter people do point out that I’m the rare “extrovert author.” Reedsy seems to be a good resource for those who are less “Hi random person, I’d like to talk to you!” (Full disclosure–haven’t tried Book Angel yet, but I appreciate someone who reaches out to independent authors to help.)

Illustrators are a bit harder to wrangle. As I’ve mentioned before in a blog post or two, the first part is figuring out what you want out of the illustration. In this case, I was primarily concerned with ad copy (as some of the Usurper’s War imagery is getting repetitive after five years). This desire was followed closely by the possibility of images getting used again for novella / short story covers set in the Usurper’s War universe but not part of the main plotline. Thankfully, I recently discovered a Twitter page that features aviation artists (@theaviationart). There were also artists I had found on FB through several aviation artwork pages I’m part of. Through various means, I winnowed things down to the following:

For various reasons things didn’t work out with anyone in the list above. In some cases, it was a matter of timing. Others it was subject matter, as “alternate history” could potential cause other clients to call into question their attention to detail or accuracy. (Which, as you can see in every case, is most excellent.) Finally, there was that bugbear of price point, as I couldn’t quite justify spending four figures on art that was first and foremost going to be ad copy. All that being said, almost everyone was a professional, and I heartily encourage A. going to buy their art and B. seeing if your needs would mesh with their timing / ability more than mine did.

Ultimately, Itifonhom 3D Models was who I went with. We’d previously worked together before for the piece commemorating “Fate of the Falklands” out of Those In Peril. I knew from perusal of his site that World War II was his area of expertise, and he jumped at the opportunity. I think you’ll enjoy the two pieces below, both of which depict scenes from Against the Tide Imperial.

As for the book in question, things have moved along well. There’s going to be some parts that end up on the cutting room floor (see possible novella cover), but with a little bit of wrap up it’s getting close to time for it to go out to beta readers. I’ve been debating doing preorder, but after the algorithms screwed up with Aries Red Sky, that’s probably not going to happen.

Zeroes vs. Spitfires

Come friends, I’d like to provide a resource regarding one of aviation buffs favorite questions:  “Which was better, the Zero or the Spitfire?”

Note: Well yes, I know that’s actually an Oscar catching the business from one Adam Haynes above.  Something about I might have wrote the book.  However, half the time Allied pilots couldn’t tell the difference anyway, and I didn’t feel like chasing down another image…or asking Anita C. Young to do one for me.

While I could go on for a couple 1000 words on this one, I’d much rather spend those keystrokes solving a certain carrier battle in the Indian Ocean.  So, instead, I present to you a web resource that provides much more information.

Of course, there’s also the small problem that the Spitfire and Zero both fought the entirety of the conflict for their respective nations.  As noted in the source above, the Mark V and most Zeroes were evenly matched through 1943.  Even more so than the Germans, however, the Japanese were playing from behind in the aeronautical research and developmental department.  Therefore, while the 1945-version of the Zero was, at best, a moderate improvement, the Mk XIV Spitfire was basically a full generation beyond the 1939 version.  Indeed, as Eric Brown, quite possibly the world’s foremost pilot of all time put it, “[t]he Spitfire XIV was the greatest British fighter of World War II.”

Even ignoring the pilot disparity that existed by 1945, the British fighter was faster, more rugged, and had heavier firepower than its Japanese counterpart.  In short, all other things being equal, the Spitfire would dictate the terms of the engagement from sighting to the Japanese pilot getting a free cremation courtesy of the Royal Air Force.


Covering the Myths

Fellow indie author Cedar Sanderson hits some of the high points on covers. I’ll not say we’re in 100% agreement with the cover = art bit, but that’s also because I sell the prints at cons. To the point where a couple of my covers have either paid for themselves completely or are well on the way to doing so. So, as always, apply the logic to your situation rather than simple rote following.

Mad Genius Club

I’ve written about this many times here at Mad Genius Club, but it’s a topic that gets asked about over and over. And it’s an important topic. The book cover is the first thing your readers see, and no matter how often they might insist that they don’t judge a book by it’s cover, they are judging silently in their heads.

Your cover sends subliminal messages, even when it’s the size of a postage stamp, and little things like font choice, age of model (hat tip to Dorothy Grant for pointing this out to me recently), and contrasting areas on the cover art can make a huge difference.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had an author say… No, let me back up a little. Let’s talk about myths and mistakes.

Writing Tips: I’m Up-I’m Moving-I’m Down (Getting to A Cover)

In the U.S. Army, there’s a movement technique called the 3-5 second rush.  It’s used to move from cover to cover before someone blasts you.  The soldier running is supposed to say, “I’m up! I’m seen! I’m moving! I’m down!”, with going prone or the next cover destination coinciding with “down.”

*pause as I imagine at least two people “CONTEXT!”*

Why is this important?  Well, a few seven (!) months ago, I did a post on cover art.  This led to some follow up questions from Eschewing Easy, so I thought I’d map out the cover negotiating process a little bit more.  As with all things, this is from my experience.  Likewise, while Amie Gibbons may be a lawyer, I most certainly am not.  So when I say “Do this thing…” about an agreement, it should not be considered a substitute for seeking the advice of someone who has passed the bar in your state.

So, I’ll deal with EE’s questions in order that they will probably apply:


1.) How do you make this fair for both author and artist?

My father used to have a saying.  It had many variations but basically it went, “Fair.  Comes once a year.  Usually there are ponies.  Do you smell horse sh*t?”

Thankfully cover negotiations are usually not so cutthroat, but inherent to ever enterprise are differing concepts of “fair.”  First and foremost, as an author a person should be fair to the artists’ time.  You know your budget, and if you’ve done your homework you should have examples of the artists’ work in front of you.  One way to approach it is to ask them how much they would charge to paint a picture similar to the one that caught your eye.  For example, the picture at the top of this blog post was similar to one the artist, a Greek national, had on his Deviantart.  Given that I had a concept in mind that was very similar to one of his pictures, it seemed to be a natural fit.  So I asked, and he was within budget.  But had he not been, I would not have tried to haggle him or had him start something only to decide later I didn’t want to spend that much money.

‘That much money’ leads to my second point, i.e., “fair” means paying an artist a going wage.  If as an author you want something with a high degree of detail, many subjects, and a setting that’s going to require a decent graphics rig to render, then you better have a plan for ~$20/hour unless there’s other incentives involved.  Like, if for your day job, you detail cars and you throw in three free detailing jobs, then of course that price drops…but it better be some serious labor in exchange for the time.  Oh, and it needs to be said: “Exposure is something you die from, not something you work for.”

On the flip side, fairness to you as the author will include work that is done on time and to standard.  It will not require you having to ping the artist multiple times to get a response and it certainly will not involve attitude.  Finally, it should include a mutually agreed upon contract that the artist generates and the author has reviewed by a legal professional.  Why do I make this point of emphasis?  Because as an author you likely have zero clue about what sort of materials will be involved in this, what other expenses the artist will have, and dozens of other things that are art specific.  Full disclosure–the better half is currently back in art school, and I now know there are things that I never would have thought an artist would have to buy that are not cheap.

Edit: I forgot to add in moral boundaries. I have a fellow author of supernatural works. Recently she had an artist balk at drawing a demon. I myself have had artists say, “Nope, not doing that. Too grisly.” In neither case is there any ill will. Just like you as an author can say, “Whoa, too much skin…”, an artist can not want to have certain things in their head.


When I say contract, I do mean a binding document.  At a minimum, this should discuss what rights are retained by whom, payment or payment schedule, how the piece will be delivered, and payment means.  There should also be language involved where the artist gives their word that no part of the art will infringe on others’ copyright nor has it been used by another author or any other work.  Once terms are agreed upon, the most common method I’ve then used is that the artist signs it, scans it, then emails to me as a .pdf.  In turn, I print said .pdf, sign it, then email it back with a CC: to myself to establish date and time.

Now, have I done this every time?  Not hardly, and sometimes the agreement’s been a little “Ash Housewares” in that it did not have every single thing I’ve laid out above.  But, I can say that for every piece of cover art that was north of $100 there’s an agreement sitting somewhere on my hard drive and also elsewhere in safe locations.  I also carry a copy of said agreements with me to most cons just in case I need to ward off someone saying, “That’s the Battlestar Galactica!”  (Yes, it’s happened.  Why, I’ve even had someone suggest I go get a hard copy of the digital painting at the top of this blog signed by Edward James Olmos.  Of course I forgave the guy–he bought a book.)

2.) When is payment?

So usually when a piece is getting developed, there are phases.  The first phase is the concept, i.e., you tell the author what you’re thinking.  No money should change hands at this point, as the author can’t be sure that the artist has the same definitions for words that he or she does.  The next phase is where the artists sends you a concept sketch.  This can range from a collage of pictures that are similar to what you desire to a 60-80% solution for the final picture.

If it’s the latter, some artists will want what I call “earnest money.” This will usually be outlined in the agreement, and it’s an artist’s hedge that you will not “change your mind” after they’ve basically drawn your picture.  Heck, some authors who will not be named have gone so far as to get a 80% solution concept sketch, stiff the original artist, then low ball with another artist to finish the piece.  Suffice to say, whether through being flighty or being a jerk, the end result is the artist is still out several hours of work.  Ergo, check your agreement and if you see something about fees for the concept sketch, ask the reasoning behind them and work through any differences you may have about them.

Regardless of how much is done in the concept sketch, once it’s agreed upon most artists want a percentage (30-60% usually) at this point.  This is money that keeps the proverbial lights on while they’re working on your piece, so you should not be worried about paying for it.  The best method to do so is via PayPal or some other service that has buyer’s protections, not direct payment.  Also, never do friends and family payment, no matter how much the other party may cry about “fees.”  Why?  Because all those buyer protections that are built into PayPal go “poof” the minute you select “send money to friends and family.”  Plus, it’s a violation of the User Agreement.

The last phase is preparing the final product.  Do not nag your artist during this period.  I say again, DO NOT NAG YOUR ARTIST DURING THIS PERIOD.  Every time he or she is having to stop to answer your email or phone, they’re not working on your project.  Or, for that matter, the three or four other ones they may have going if they’re really successful.  You have a date that was agreed upon in the contract, and they should be professional enough to backwards plan enough time into their work to allow for revisions.

3.) What about revisions?

Look at that pacing!  It’s like I planned that or something.  Okay, here’s the deal–as an author, you’re not going to get a lot of revisions.  Indeed, from the artist’s perspective, they may have put something in the agreement language about major versus minor revisions and the number thereof.  Know why this happened if they did?  Because some numb skull asked them for about ten different revisions, flaked out, and then bailed on the entire project for whatever reason.  (Yes, that’s pejorative, but there’s not some magic bottle artists’ go to for their time.  Ergo, partial payment.)

In general, if you’re feeling anxious about revisions, the artist and you can program in extra “gates” within the agreement.  Understand this might cost you more $$-$$$, which is reasonable given the time disruption.  Imagine if you had to write a story on commission then stop after every chapter, send it to get revisions, wait for those to come back, revise, resend, rinse and repeat.  That’d be time consuming and would likely eat time, no?  See above about magic time in a bottle, none of.

Once revisions are complete, it is at this point that you’ll make final payment.  Again, I swear by PayPal–others hate it.  But I’ll be honest–most times I’ve heard a “An author screwed me on PayPal…” story from an artist, come to find out that the flip side of that coin did not paint the artist in a good light.  Which, of course, led to bad word of mouth and some poor artists.

4.) What if, as an author, I’m just not happy with the final product?

You know that saying, “The customer is always right?”  Well, that doesn’t totally apply here.  Art isn’t a widget or a car–there’s not a whole lot of exact dimensions, other than the size of the image, involved.  So, before going ballistic, ask yourself, “Why am I unhappy?”

Is it because the image is not a 100% match for what you expected? –Sorry, but we don’t have mind reading technology yet where the artist can trace the exact image in your head.  This doesn’t mean that you have to accept something having, say, swastikas rather than Soviet red stars.  But…well, let me just post a pic that was a 85% solution to what I had originally wanted:

You know what?  Both of these convey the fact that an American task force is being attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy.  Both were prepared by artists who are experts in their respective (nautical  and comic art) fields.  In the case of the latter, the only reason I went back to get another cover was because everyone, and I do mean everyone, asked me if I was writing a graphic novel.  In the case of the former, Wayne simply admitted he thought having the POV be from behind the B5N (the plane dropping the torpedo) was beyond his capabilities and made the picture too cluttered.  (Upon further review, he was right.) You know what?  Both men still got paid, and I still use Eric’s piece for marketing.

Is it because the artist did not follow instructions?–Now we’re talking a bit heftier reason to get a case of the grumps.  However, when one says “did not follow instructions,” was it because going with what the person said would have required basically starting from scratch, caused the author to bust a publication deadline, lead to the artist missing another deadline, or due to an unforeseen circumstance like, oh, an F-3 tornado ripping the artists’ roof off?  (Don’t know the person myself, but I know of the situation from a con acquaintance.)  If so, don’t be a jerk–if the cover is still functional, will attract the eye, and does not violate, say, historical accuracy for a novel set in Victorian England (“I said a pistol, not a blaster!”), go with it.  Understand that iron triangle (good, fast, or cheap–pick two) rules apply here if you’re up against a deadline.  If you are really unhappy, never use the artist again.  That includes never giving them word of mouth or recommendations.

However, in all things, remember this is a two way street.  Authors with reputations for being flighty or divas don’t get good cover artists except through luck or $$$. “Will have to put up with difficult authors’ crap…” isn’t necessary a stated fee.  I can tell you, however, that it is a mental one.  Don’t be that guy / gal.

If it ended up in court, is the discrepancy so obvious that your victory is nearly certain?  I’m meaning you asked for a bodice ripper cover set in the Antebellum United States and ended up with a cover that looks like it should grace a fantasy novel.  The main subject was an Asian man and you got Napoleon Dynamite.  Think “John Wayne as Genghis Khan”-level of “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!”  Because if you’re going this route, it better be something that makes having Nun Thunderdome seem sane.  (“Two Nuns Enter.  One Nun Leaves. Two Nuns Enter. One Nun Leaves.”  “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?” “Oh, hello Bishop O’Reilly!  *nervous laugh*”)

If all these conditions are met…still think long and hard about it.  There is no guarantee that you’ll win.  But, if after you’ve eliminated every other recourse and the principle and/or amount is so high you’re ready to expend time and money wringing satisfaction out of someone, lawyer up.


5.) What about reproduction rights?

First ask yourself, “Why do I want reproduction rights?”  Then ask yourself, “Why do I want reproduction rights now?”  The reason for the first is that you’re going to pay some $$$ for them.  If you want full rights to slap that picture on anything you want, expect to pay 30-50% over what you’re just paying for the cover.  This is reasonable–artists with rights can keep making money on your piece, sans cover design, for years.  You can search for an artist who will let you keep all this stuff in the original price–or you can find a good one that’s going to charge you a reasonable price for it.  I know authors who insist on the former…and you can tell.

If your book sells well enough that marketing is a thing, you can always come back for them later.  Slap a line in the agreement about paying $$$ for future full rights by XXX date if necessary, at which point the price becomes open for negotiation again.  Get it ironclad by a lawyer, then move on.  The important thing is that you get your book out in a timely manner with plenty of $$$ left for editing and marketing.  Come back for the “I’d like to put this on mugs everywhere!” later.

Anyway, hope this helps folks looking to move towards cover art.  I’ll probably come back to edit this later after running it by a couple of cover artists.


Writing Tips: Cover me!

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, I can be bad about updating this blog.  (*simultaneously from the peanut gallery*  “Noooooo, really?!”)  I will try to be better about that, especially given the fact for some reason people keep putting me on panels.  (Con Organizers: “Uh, James, people also put bears on unicycles.  We’re not saying there are similarities, but…well, here are some pedal clips.”)

One way I’m going to try and combat the dead spaces is to find regular topics to discuss.  Hopefully the folks who follow this blog have actually realized that (yes Di, there will be Halestorm on Metal Mondays), while for all you new folks it’ll just seem like, “Whoa, this guy sure does talk a lot.”  Another sorta regular thing I’m going to do (which is my way of saying I’m not committing to a day as that’s how certain “Enforcers” become empowered) is to start putting up “Writing Tips.”  These could also be entitled “That time James put his hand on a hot stove…twice!” or “I could never be so lucky again…” (with apologies to Jimmy Doolittle).  In all things, your mileage my vary, and if you have the time you can find links to many Master Jedi over at Dorothy Grant’s blog.  Not to encourage paralysis by analysis, but her links are worth diving into.  Also for a time I had a running FB post on my main page with several links.

Today’s topic is covers, or more specifically “What I’ve Learned About Getting Covers.”  The point where I decided to self-publish on Kindle was in late 2012.  I had a short story that had received an “Honorable Mention” from the L. Ron Hubbard “Writer’s of the Future” Contest.  I figured with minimal risk, I’d put it up for $.99, see what shook out.  Problem is, your humble narrator is about as good at art as he is at playing outfield during baseball / softball.  (My nickname was “Old Faithful” in Little League…because I’d drop at least one fly ball a game.)  The better half, at this time, was on art hiatus (more on that later).  So, clearly, this was going to get outsourced.  Poking around the internet, I heard of a place called Deviantart.

Deviantart is a website where amateur artists can place their work.  The site keeps photos low resolution and with a big DA watermark on them to protect copyright.  If you can imagine an internet “First Friday” art gallery, this would be one of them.  The best thing about the site is that it has an awesome search engine.  So if you’re looking for something like “starships,” you’ll get a plethora of returns whose authors you can contact using the message function.  From there, you can start asking them what price range they charge.  In my case, I found a gentleman named Jon Holland and we worked out a price that was well under $100.  This was the result:

That’s a solid sci-fi cover, folks.  One look at it tells the reader what they’re getting, i.e. space and starships.  Does it look like David Weber’s Honorverse covers?  No.  But, as I’ll get to, you want something of that level you better be able to pay $$$.

Now, the internet, as with all things, has evolved since 2012.  For that same price or even lower, there is now The Book Cover Designer.  Much like Deviantart was a store front window for random art in different interests TBCD is a location where you can see book covers that can fit into certain genres.  For example, Anita just recently finished a fantasy-type cover:

Of course the title and such will be modified if someone purchases it, but as you can tell we’re already well past halfway to a fantasy / paranormal cover. Because this pretty much screams “Despite my young age I’m still just a mage in a rage…” (with apologies to Smashing Pumpkins).  To give you some idea of TBCD prices, this one will be a mere $50 after Anita’s page finishes uploading it.  In addition, unlike other cover sites, TBCD explicitly tells authors “You sell a cover once, no derivatives.” More on this later.

“But wait, I want my stuff to look exactly like it could have been published by Tor, Baen, or Roc.”  Ooookaaaay, but don’t say you weren’t warned.  So I got Jon to do the cover for An Unproven Concept (both editions) as well as “Ride of the Late Rain.”  Problem is, after talking to a some established folks at Libertycon, they were quite blunt that I needed to step up my game.  No fault of Jon’s–I still like the original cover.  However, in the words of one reader, “Yeah, just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger on it.” Getting in contact with folks I knew who were crazy successful, I asked for some references to cover artists.  One I was pointed towards was Justin Adams.

As you may be able to tell, Justin is not only a gifted artist, but the primary cover designer for a couple of prominent indie authors.  Which is another way of saying, my wallet screamed in agony when we started talking prices.  Basically if I wanted art, to include the rights to said art, it was going to be $$$, and that first number wasn’t going to be a “5” or lower. We worked out a price, and the result was “The Ballroom”

But having a pic didn’t mean we were done.  Notice you don’t see any font up there?  Also notice that there’s a lot going on in this picture?  A cover should be exciting, but not too busy or it distracts from what you’re trying to achieve (i.e., someone buys your book).  At this point, it’s time for *superhero theme music* The Cover Designer.  What a cover designer does is find genre appropriate font, framing, and the perfect “thumbnail ready” part of your picture.  In my case, I turned this part of things over to my friend (and Hugo nominee) Cedar Sanderson:

What does this cover tell you?  It hopefully tells you “The shit has hit the fan…and oh look, an out of control manure truck is making its way down the ice slicked driveway!”  Whether or not you get that vibe, I can tell you it made a huge difference in sales. As in, when I swapped it out with Jon’s cover, I no kidding saw a double digit increase for like three weeks.  If you count the sales I’ve made in person, this thing has paid for itself several times over.  Also, because I own the rights to the art, I can do things like this:

No, that’s not “be at a con in emergency lighting,” but “use the image to create a backdrop for when I have a smaller booth than normal.”  This was a huge boon, as I’m used to having a true 6′-8′ space when I sell at cons versus the compressed space at WW.

A word on wanting to get that awesome art, btw–if you’re selling online, a lot of detail is going to be lost when someone is doing a search for your genre.  Basically, if you’re getting into things like, “I want my Queen Elizabeth-class warship to have this exact number of portholes…” with your artist, you are wasting your time.  First off, depending on your genre, no one is going to care.  For those of you who have romance fans in your life, when was the last time you heard them say, “Wow, I’m glad they got the ivory hooks exactly right on that bodice!”?  Exactly, and I’d dare say most novel fans are like that unless it’s a major franchise.  (Yeah, screw up the angle on an X-wing’s cockpit and watch what happens.)

I’ll be blunter for effect, as I think this point really needs to be driven home–No one is going to see the damn windows on your cover unless you’re selling in person. Even then, the number of people you are going to have be mesmerized because of the perfect number of portholes down the HMS Barham‘s side < the number of additional books you’re going to have to sell because the artist charged you more.  Because trust me, when you start talking crazy stuff like “Oh, oh, and I want people to be able to see that the pennant number is in exactly this font…,” experienced artists start thinking in terms of hours that will take.  If they like you, they’ll gently point out that the price of the art goes up for the amount of detail.  If they don’t like you, they’ll just add another $1-200 to the cost of the piece and smile as they watch the author (“BUT IT WILL LOOK AWESOME!”) fight with the miser (“Just because I got one hand on Lincoln’s throat does not mean I cannot pimp slap you…”) in your head.

The above is not to imply that artists are inherently evil.  That being said, there less than scrupulous artists out there.  Indeed, some will sell you a cover, change maybe two elements and the font, and then sell it to someone else.  Other tricks are for an artist to be somewhat sketchy about terms, then start adding “surprise” fees or delays at the last minute because they know you want your book published.  How do you avoid this?  Well, in almost each and every case (unless you’re married to your cover artist), I recommend drawing up an agreement.  If you go through a site like TBCD, said document will be inherent to the terms the artist puts up / site maintains.  However, if you’re doing this independently, either the artist will have a standard form.  At worst, you can always has things out via email provided you save your messages.

When you do the agreement, make sure you, the author, are explicit in what you want.  I have found that if an artist is really experienced, he or she will help you with this.  For instance, Wayne Scarpaci, the artist who did the painting for the hardcopy of Acts of War and the “Death of Kongo” work on my table up above, asked prescient questions that I had not even thought of about paint schemes.  Justin, when I sent him what I wanted for An Unproven Concept, asked me questions about where the furniture needed to be placed and the scale of the alien cruiser based on the narrative.  Anita regularly asks me questions about lighting even as I’m getting growled at for wanting “Just one more change…”.  In all three cases, they help me find things that I would totally have flubbed.

If the artist is inexperienced, like other activities in life communication is key.  Thus, when I say “explicit” above, I mean if having a certain shade of a color is critical to your vision then specify “teal” versus “cyan.”  Also make sure that your artist knows what platforms you’re planning on putting the cover up on.  Think you’re mad when they get your order wrong in the drive through?  Spend $400 on a cover and find out that it can’t be uploaded on Amazon due to arcane choice the artist (who is now not returning your emails) made.  (No that did not happen to me.  Yes, I know of someone it happened to.) Neophyte or experten, in all cases get the master files (.tiff, high dpi .jpg) so that you’re not dependent on your cover artist’s continued mortality, sanity, or availability to fix a problem.
Seems like a crapload of work, doesn’t it?  Well, just so you don’t have to go through this whole thing again, let me distill it into 10 takeaways:


  1. Budget for cover art right after you budget for an editor, and for the same reason.
  2. Don’t be afraid to look at alternate sources to find cheaper, but still serviceable cover art.
  3. People say they don’t judge a book by its cover.  They lie.
  4. When possible, get the rights for your art.
  5. Networking is key.  If you see another author’s cover art you like, make sure you ask them where they got it.
  6. A good cover artist is worth their weight in gold.  Make sure you take care of your cover artists by, in the spirit of #5, telling other people about them.
  7. Make sure you have an idea what you want before you contact the artist, convey it clearly, then draw up an agreement that takes care of both parties.
  8. Remember that it’s going to be a thumbnail.
  9. It’s not just the picture–cover design and font choice are important.
  10. Genre, genre, genre–fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, military sci-fi, etc. are all different listings on Amazon for a reason, so plan your cover design accordingly.
